Winter Hibernation
Stays

Tucked away just a short walk from the harbour yet completely private, this architect-designed villa for two is made for cosy winter stays. Super-fast broadband means you can work from home with ease if you need to, then close the laptop and switch into full retreat mode. Underfloor heating keeps every corner warm, while the egg-shaped wood burner (with a generous supply of logs) creates the kind of glow that makes you never want to leave the sofa. On clearer evenings, light the fire pit in the garden and enjoy sundowners as the light fades across Mount’s Bay.

The roll-top bath for two sits in the bedroom window, so you can soak while watching the weather roll in over the sea. When you do feel like stepping out, the snug Ship Inn is just a two-minute walk away for a pint by the fire, and hot pasties from Mousehole Deli & Kitchen are the perfect takeaway treat to enjoy back on the balcony overlooking the bay.

Winter Stay Special

Start with a weekend (or mid-week short stay) from £950. Extend to a full week for just £650 extra, or settle in for two weeks for only another £400. It’s the easiest way to turn a short escape into a proper winter hibernation.

Winter things to do nearby

Right on the doorstep

  • Evening stroll around the harbour after dark to see the Christmas lights (mid-December to early January) reflecting on the water.

  • Tom Bawcock’s Eve on 23 December — the lantern procession and Stargazy Pie tradition at the Ship Inn.

  • A brisk dip in the tidal rock pool (or just watching others) followed by something hot back at the villa.

  • Quiet morning walks along the South West Coast Path toward Newlyn or Lamorna when the weather settles.

  • Sample a couple of glasses from the award winning wine list at The Old Coastguard, or dine here by the open fire.

Short trips (bus, taxi or short drive)

  • Newlyn Filmhouse is a stylish two-screen independent cinema in a converted granite fish warehouse, screening a mix of art-house, mainstream and local films. Perfect for a winter afternoon or evening, with a café-bar upstairs for a drink or bite before or after.

  • Penzance for independent shops, galleries, the promenade, and the Jubilee Pool’s winter cold-water swims or full-moon dips.

  • Marazion and St Michael’s Mount on a clear day, the causeway walk is atmospheric in winter light.

  • Newlyn for coffee and croissants at Lovetts, take a walk around the harbour and take in the fish market atmosphere, followed by a sublime lunch at The Tolcarne Inn and learn why it deserves it Michelin Bib.

  • St Ives for galleries, the harbour, and a slower winter version of the town (easy by train or bus from Penzance).

Cosy & cultural

  • Browse Mousehole’s small galleries and artisan shops without the summer crowds.

  • Book a private foraging walk with Rachel at  Wild Walks South West.

  • In-house massage or spa treatment with Yolanda Philpott so you never have to leave the property.

  • Private chef meal or gourmet hamper from Indulgence Catering, especially good on a stormy evening.

  • Film night in the snug with the wood burner going and the weather doing its thing outside.

A little further (still easy day trips)

  • Cape Cornwall and the Tin Coast for dramatic Atlantic views and mining heritage.

  • Sennen or Land’s End on a bright day for empty beaches and big skies.

  • Hayle Estuary for winter birdwatching (wigeon, teal, curlew and more).

  • A coastal walk around the Minack Theatre area or Porthcurno even when the theatre itself is closed.
